Because XP was to be "killed" yesterday, there were a few attention seekers who spread the usual trite. Like this rebuild from the ground up article from Stross.
I would have a ton of things to say about this sorry excuse for a news article, but as you will have it, Thurrott got there first. His analysis is head on. As it points out, MS has already rebuilt before.
Of course, the fact that Microsoft is in no need to rebuilt their modern OS, doesn't mean they aren't looking far, far ahead.
As Mary Jo Folley points out, there is reason to believe Singularity is that far, far ahead OS. Microsoft is supposedly calling it Midori.
